6 Useful Ways to Reuse an Old Router

6 Useful Ways to Reuse an Old Router

Introduction

The Internet is a necessity if you’re living in 2020. It makes life so much easier than before. It keeps you connected to the world, can be your shopping window, can get you a taxi and much more. It has been incorporated into our lives to such an extent that we cannot go back. Life without the internet is unimaginable.

Today, entire businesses rely mainly on the internet and web-based services and other businesses are joining in. Even the government is moving slowly towards the digital era as maintaining physical records for people is not at all feasible.

Internet access is one of the most important things for everyone in this day and age. A router is necessary to every broadband connection, be it in a home network or an office network. This tiny device does the most remarkable thing, giving the system to you in any corner. Given the current climate, companies and businesses are following a work from home rule, which is why it is more than essential to have a stable and reliable internet connection at your disposal.

So, your router has serviced a lot, and now it is old. But, not as old as you! If not as a router, you can use it as other crucial internet devices and trust me. It can save a lot of your money on the go.

Now We Will Look Into The 6 Ways You Can Reuse Your Old Router Like A New One!

1. Internet Bridges

Do you have problems gaining the internet from the far corner of your home? Don’t worry. Use your old router as an internet bridge. Just plug the router, insert the WAN cable of yours in the WAN port, take some optical fiber cable and connect the ends with the LAN ports of your old router and WAN ports of your new one. Now you can place your new router at the far end of the home, enjoy the internet!

2. Public Network

You can use your router to give the people around you free network coverage! Just delete the security settings in your old router and disable its password. Then connect the new router’s LAN port to the WAN port of your old one via an optical fiber connection, and voila!

You have your password-protected network and another free one for the guest so that your devices connected to your system will be safe from unwanted hackers.

3. VPN Network

A router can be served as a server as well. The router’s essential thing is it creates a VPN server if you wish, and the router must support some software instead of the firmware. What happens is, a router is like a mini-computer. It has its operating system, a secure channel, and many more.

Your job is to replace the operating system of your router to a third party firmware. Then you can set up your manual VPN connection from that firmware. For example, DD-WRT is a firmware you can use on your router.

4. Internet Switch

Now, in the previous section, you’ve seen that your old router can make a bridge to the far end of your home, but if you require LAN connection to more computers directly, then? Well, no need to buy switches. Just connect one LAN port of the new router to the WAN port of the old one. Now, you can use the other LAN channels of both the routers!

5. Web Servers

Being paid for the host server of your blog? Well, your router can help you to do a little in this context. As we all know, a router is a mini-computer, so it can host small blogs or websites.

Just remove your router’s operating system and place a third-party firmware DD-WRT or similar, as discussed above, and with this, it can host a little website. Not much of it, but still, it will be useful to you. You can store your family data over it. You can host one or two of your blogs yourself! This device becomes pretty handy.

6. Make Some Money

Now, if your interest is not doing such things, you can pretty surely sell your router. Many websites are there where you can place an advertisement for it. If someone likes the specifications, you earn something from the old router of yours.

Conclusion

You can use a router through the arris modem login for many things apart from just its own business. It has many features inside it, you need to dive deeper to learn its use, not in the router alone, but you can also take some components of it and use it elsewhere.

Finally, if your router is too old, it’s better to replace it or sell it anyway. It is not much worth to you.
