FACEBOOK NETWORKING

12
Recently, the most effective form of networking is through the internet.

The Facebook has made it possible to connect with people easily. Most people use it to
service their network. You can send messages and cards.

The birthday reminder helps you to remember people’s birthday.

You can post comments on different issues of life and you can chat with your friends e.t.c. Also you can market your
product and services on facebook free of charge. In fact if you are not on face book
you are missing a lot.

Let me blow your mind a bit, do you know that the founder
of facebook Mark Zuckerberg actually started facebook as a student in his
dormitory while at Harvard. First for the use of students in his school, then it
spread to other schools like Stanford and Yale, then rest of his country and to other
continents of the world.
Before he knew it, Mark Zuckerberg was joined by two other fellow
Harvard-students – Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes – to help him grow
the site to the next level. Only months later when it was officially a national student network phenomenon, Zuckerberg
and Moskovitz dropped out of Harvard to pursue their dreams and run Facebook
full time. In August 2005, thefacebook was officially called Facebook and the
domain facebook.com was purchased for a reported $200,000. Facebook is the
most visited website.

He became a billionaire in dollars at the age of 26.
It is important for you to give expression to that your idea you think is little now.
Who knows if your idea will be another change of century that will change the way
we do things.

Service your network by visiting members of your network, give gifts to them, send text message,

give them a call, help them solve a problem, remember their

birthday, celebrate with them and care for them.
Another worst kind of situation you could be in is to call the people in your
network only when you need their help. Surely, not all of them will respond to you.
Nobody wants to be used and dumped. Networking is a mutual process.. A wise
man once said, “You are just about 2-3 people away from the person you want to
meet. Just think of a person you want to meet.

Let’s say for example your vice chancellor, rector or the provost of your school.

Do you now any body that knows the vice chancellor? If yes, may be the dean of your department. And you don’t
have any relationship with the dean. Who do you know that knows the dean? At
least you know the president of your department. That is it. That is how it works.
You can always connect with anybody you want to meet.
Networking is not what you do by default, it is done deliberately. Do you know
that the way you want to connect to some people like celebrity now,
somebody somewhere wants to meet you? Make yourself easier to reach
and accessible. What you make happen for others will eventually happen to you.
Examples of friendships that have change the world through their entrepreneurial
activities
1. Tayo Aderinokun and Fola Adeola of Guaranty Trust Bank, Nigeria.
2. Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google: Google started when Sergey and
Larry were Ph.D. students at Stanford University in Computer Science.
3. Bill Gate and Paul Allen of Microsoft- They were both friends from high
school though they went to different colleges.
4. David Filo and Jerry Yang of Yahoo!- David and Jerry started Yahoo! When
they were both Ph.D. candidates in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.

NETWORKING EXERCISE
I will want you at this stage to do an exercise by reviewing your friends’ list by
considering the following.
1. List out the top ten (10) friends you have in your network.
2. Which friends on the list are pessimistic, parasitic and negative that you are
going to remove from your top ten (10)?
3. Who are the people of influence that are connected to your friends?
4. Who are the people you are going to add deliberately to join your top
ten (10)?
5. Who are the five (5) persons you would like to approach to discuss mentorship,
in area of academics, business and life issues generally.
Success in networking is not just a matter of who you know, but who you are
willing to meet.
As a networking student entrepreneur, you make things work faster, easier, better
and cheaper for yourself especially in your academics and business activities. A
networker knows the kind of fish he/she wants, the kinds of water they are found,
and goes along to the water body with the right gear and strategy.

For you to survive and succeed in this twenty-first century, you have to network and market yourself personally.
