How To Create A Formidable Team For Better Business Management And Accountability

Building a successful business team is more than just hiring a group of people with the right professional skills. They must be able to function well as a team. Hiring the right people with the right skills is one of the most important in building a strong team, but that is not all there is to it. As the business owner, you have to make sure the team work well together and remain focused on the right course. If your team are not cooperative or do not trust each other, you’ll have a lot of problem in your business. It becomes easier to manage your business when the people you work with are in good spirits with each other.

Creating a formidable team for better business management and accountability is not that easy of a task, because you need to know each person’s characters, strengths and weaknesses. This will help you know where each person can function, and in what capacity. It is important to build a team that is reliable and trustworthy. A good and formidable team will consist of people who have positive and right attitude for relating with others. Below are some things to consider if you want to build a good team that helps to promote success for your business, and offers you better management and accountability:

  • Set individual roles

Every team member should know what their work is exactly. You cannot just give them work as a group without delegating duties, you will end up having no one to do the job. You should define each person’s job and how it fits into the big idea you’re all working towards. When people do not know their specific jobs, it causes confusion and resentment in the team. So, it is important that you designate specific jobs to each person, as it helps to build a formidable team.

  • Common goals

A formidable team will not only work towards achieving their individual goals, but the company’s common goals. You must make sure your team fully understands the ultimate goal of the business as this will help them to work better together. They must know that their individual contribution is towards a particular common goal. Every business is different in what they want to achieve per time and coaching your own team will help them know what to focus on. For instance, if your present goal is to enhance and improve customer service and satisfaction, then each team member should put it first on their priority too. Your team has to agree with the common goal and be willing to work towards achieving it.

  • Trust

You should be able to trust your team to do the job you gave to them. You hired them to work for you and support you, so leave them to do their job. It goes a long way in creating a happy and successful team who are diligent and will do anything not to lose your trust. Most top executives have a common saying that goes, “I hire the best people and get out of their way.” When your team knows that you trust them on the job you’ve given to them, it enables them to give their best to it, knowing fully well that they must not disappoint you.

  • Team building

If you involve the members of a team in a team building exercise, it makes them become closer and they have opportunity to learn from each other. You should implement some kind of team building into your staff engagement strategy in order to foster good relationship among the team members, that ultimately leads to better management of the business, and overall success of the business.

  • Communication

This is a major part of team building strategy that should be incorporated into your staff engagement plan. You should make your team members free to air their views on different issues, concerns, or feedback from customers. Show that you appreciate their ideas when they come up with some. A great team will inspire each other and offer great ideas which is good for the success of the business. It is important to have a strong communication link between you and your team members and among themselves.

  • Training

A formidable team does not just grow from nowhere; you have to be committed to their training per time to get them to this level. Look for areas where your team members are looking to achieve and areas they need help with, then help them to develop in that area. You should have a list of leadership and business skills that you take your team members through from time to time, make them acquainted to new things in the market and train them on it. You should have a number of coaching packages too to maximize the returns on investment on those trainings. If you have to bring in experts to train them, then you should, as you will get your returns when you start seeing the changes in the work they do.

  • Accountability

Make your team know who they are directly accountable to, it doesn’t have to be you as the overall head. You can delegate some people to be different team leaders and ensure that the team members are accountable to them. Accountability is when team members expect the team lead to take record of their performance and tie to real consequences. It doesn’t always have to be about punishment for negative performance, but just to evaluate each member’s performance from time to time. As the business owner, you should let your team members know what is expected of them ahead, and hold them accountable for their results each time. Give positive feedback if they have done well also.

  • Create clear systems of recognition and reward

When team members know that there is an incentive or bonus attached to their good performance, they will tend to do more. They always want to know why they have not been given special recognition if they have been doing well for a long period of time. Let there be a standard system of evaluation of each members’ works and reward them accordingly. This also helps to increase accountability and diligence to work. It is a way of letting them know how they’re fairing in the business and where they need to work on more.

  • Respect

There’s a saying that goes, “you can never go around by putting respect ahead of you.” If team members do not feel respected, they won’t be motivated to work and give their best to the company. Allow them to be able to give their ideas without being insulted. You might not know that you’re doing when you don’t respect your team members, but you’re destroying their self-esteem and confidence which is not good for the business. You do not have to dress down your team members even if you’re the leader, they still deserve your respect.

  • Appreciation

Appreciation is a great tool for motivation for your team members. Let them know when they’re doing well and appreciate them. Positive feedback can go a long way to creating a formidable team for better business management and accountability. Negative feedback demotivates the team and makes them lose interest in the given task, which will affect your business negatively in the long run.
