Omoyele Sowore Biography, Networth, family life and political ambitions

Omoyele “Yele” Sowore is a pro-democracy and human rights activist from Nigeria who is best known for launching the website Sahara Reporters. He established the African Action Congress party in August 2018 and stood as its presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections in Nigeria. In the general election for president of Nigeria in 2023, Sowore is also a candidate. After organizing a protest called RevolutionNow on August 3, 2019, Sowore was detained by the Nigerian State Security Service (SSS) on suspicion of treason. On January 1, 2021, he was detained once more and assaulted at a protest in Abuja. On May 31, 2021, Sowore was hurt by a policeman while participating in a protest in Abuja.

Biography

Omoyele Sowore was born in Ese Odo, Ondo State, on February 16, 1971. His family is polygamous, and he has fifteen siblings. When he was 12 years old, he learned how to ride a motorcycle so that he could go to the lake every morning before going to school and fish for food for his entire family. The military regime in Nigeria fueled Sowore’s zeal and desire for the media. After being expelled twice for political reasons and student activity, Sowore’s academic program at the University of Lagos was extended by two additional years, allowing him to complete his studies from 1989 to 1995. Between 1992 to 1994, he served as President of the University of Lagos Student Union Government, where he promoted anti-cult and anti-corruption causes. Sowore graduated from Columbia University with a master’s in public administration.

Family life

Opeyemi Oluwole, a Nigerian American, is Omoyele Sowore’s wife. They were wed in 2004. When Omoyele Sowore was re-arrested by the Department of State Services on December 6 on charges of treason, a crime, cyber stalking, and money laundering after being initially held on August 3, 2019, she raised awareness by calling for the journalist’s release. She has organized numerous protests and discussions in response to the Department of State Services’ detention of her husband. On September 24, 2019, she supported protesters in New York City’s United Nations Plaza and called for international intervention from Democracy Now and the US Senate to secure Omoyele’s release. It is assumed that Sowore and his family had resided in Haworth, New Jersey.

Lifestyle

Due to his tenacity and never-say-die mentality, Sowore has always been considered a “hard nut to crack” by his rivals and political foes. Additionally, he is a fierce campaigner. In 1989, he took part in student demonstrations against the terms of an IMF loan for an oil pipeline in Nigeria totaling $120 million. One of the conditions of the IMF financing was the consolidation of Nigeria’s 28 universities into only 5. Sowore oversaw 5,100 students in a 1992 demonstration against the Nigerian government. Seven protesters were killed as police opened fire on the gathering. Sowore was detained and mistreated while in detention. On June 12, 1993, Omoyele joined in the call for the removal of military rule and the installation of a democratic government. A number of people were detained, arrested, and given life-saving treatment by government officials. During his time as SUG President in Unilag, allegations that he was a member of a cult surfaced, making him a target for rivals in other cults. He was attacked in 1999 and given an injection of “Lead” poison during that attack, which led to them eventually catching up with him. He was brought to America for the required medical treatment, after which he recovered. In addition, Sowore was accused of asking President Buhari for money in order to damage former President Goodluck Jonathan during the 2014 election. It has been asserted that he used his media business, Sahara Reporter, to blackmail government figures for personal gain.

Sowore is the founder of Sahara Reporters.

In a modest Manhattan room, Omoyele Sowore founded Sahara Reporters, a media company, in 2006. He established Sahara Reporters as a news outlet to provide him a platform from which to criticize Nigeria’s corrupt political structure. Grants from both the Forn and Omidyar Foundations have been donated to Sahara Reporters. Sahara Reporters has a policy of refusing to take funds for advertisements and other forms of support from the Nigerian government. It rose to fame by becoming the first journalistic organization or media firm to locate and publish a photograph of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a suspected terrorist accused of attempting to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day by detonating a plastic bomb that exploded in his underwear.

Sowore’s Presidential Ambition

On February 25, 2018, Sowore announced his desire to run for president in Nigeria’s 2019 general elections. In August 2018, he founded the African Action Congress (AAC), and on its stated platform, he intended to run for president in 2019. On October 6, 2018, Sowore was introduced as the party’s presidential candidate, although she ultimately fell short. Sowore came in fifth place with 33,953 votes in the 2019 presidential election, which was won by All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate Muhammadu Buhari with 15,191,847 votes. He has also reemerged as the African Action Congress (AAC2023)’s presidential contender in the general elections. The colossus has pledged to lay the way for the legalization of marijuana as one of his platform pledges. But he believes that it is a multi-billion-dollar sector that the government is too afraid to support.

Sowore’s Networth

The valuation of Sahara Reporters as determined by indications places Omoyele Sowore’s net worth at an estimated $10 million. The anticipated daily income for Sahara Reporters is $3,000 on average.
