PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES IN NIGERIA

The basic necessities of man are food, clothing, and shelter. Medication could be said to be the fourth, due to its importance in critical health conditions. The need for medication cannot be overemphasized due to its essence in the treatment of various diseases.

In Nigeria, history preserves records of how natural ingredients were exploited and combined to produce what was referred to as “traditional medicine”. In fairness and sincerity, this traditional medicine was very effective in many cases, but at other times, it was overwhelmed by the gravity of the illness. This, I suppose, was a result of poor assumption and interpretation of the symptoms, incorrect dosage administration, and poor preservation methods.

With the advent of orthodox medicine, the narrative has changed due to proper regulation of pharmaceutical activities by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. This association performs many functions including documenting and monitoring the processes of pharmaceutical companies, inducting qualified personnel, and many other functions.

Though Orthodox medicine has solved many of the problems that militated the efficacy of traditional medicine (e.g. Dosage administration). Orthodox medicine also has its own problems such as abuse, poor hygiene during manufacture, sale of expired drugs, and most importantly; the side effects of these drugs.

Therefore, to help check all these, this article is written to enlighten the reader on the legitimately recognized Pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria.

List Of Companies

The companies listed below are some of the long-standing pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria. The company details that would be discussed revolve around the company owners, their location in Nigeria, contact details, and the type and use of their products. These companies are:

What we currently have as Emzor pharmaceutical was formerly known as “Emzor Chemists Limited”. This was to show the humble beginning of the company as a small retail outlet for pharmaceuticals (Chemist) in Lagos state. Today, it is a full-blown pharmaceutical company producing over 140 medical products and consumables.

It has a manufacturing team cutting across related fields of study including Chemistry and Biochemistry. This combination strengthens the team to maintain the status-quo of quality pharmaceutical delivery, and also lookout for ways to improve the standard of their products through advanced research.

Currently, Emzor has 3 factories at Ajai, Richfield, and Aswani, all in Lagos State. It also has a factory at Sagamu in Ogun state; making a total of 4 factories.

The Nigerian company has its headquarter in Ikeja, Lagos state; a factory at Ota, Ogun State, and a depo at Aba, Abia State. The company has a team of indigenous executive management headed by Mr. Patrick Ajah, who is the Managing Director/CEO. Conclusion

Orthodox medicine has come to stay permanently in Nigeria, and it is also in high demand. For this reason, an average of 115 pharmaceutical companies operate in Nigeria currently.

Therefore, to ensure proficiency, I strongly recommend that Nigerian agencies delegated with the responsibility of maintaining the high standard of these drugs and medical supplies should not relent in ensuring that high quality products and medications are delivered to the citizens.
