Job Introduction
The BBC Step Into Tech training course is the ideal opportunity for women wanting to move into a career in Software Engineering. This in-depth course provides the fundamental skills needed to kick start a career in the sector.
This course is ideal for women who may be returning to work after a break, college leavers and career changers; anyone that is motivated for a career in software Engineering but need to learn the core skills first.
One of the new students on the programme, Emma, said: “When I heard I had been selected to join the first Step Into Tech programme I was so excited to get started. I have always wanted to get into technology but didn’t know how I could break into the industry without going to University. This programme had given me the opportunity to not only learn the skills required to get started in a technology career, it also helped me to understand and feel more confident in how I could apply for an entry level role, hopefully within the BBC.”

Role Responsibility
This 14 week programme delivered in partnership with our external training provider, will incorporate a full immersive week, followed by evening sessions covering front end and back end development, ending on a project delivery of your choice. The course will be delivered onsite at the BBC. The curriculum will deliver the most up to date technologies, with practical applications, all of which will be underpinned by core personal development sessions for your success. Please note: The immersive week will run each day starting at 10am and finishing at 4pm, followed by one evening per week which will be Thursday evening 6:30pm until 9pm. It is important to note that there will also be approximately 10 hours extra homework per week on top of that.
Curriculum:
Immersive week: An overview of the tech industry, understanding the fundamentals of computer science, developing problem solving skills.
Front end – to include HTML, CSS, responsive design and an introduction to React
Back end – Introduction to cloud (AWS), databases and backend technologies
Project – Have the ability to apply learning to personally create a project application
All underpinned by ongoing personal development
There will be continued support throughout the course.
Who Should Apply?
You must be motivated for a career in Software Engineering and demonstrate the qualities that make a great software engineer. This course will be challenging, but you will get the support you need throughout. You’ll need to be committed to the training, and be able to manage your time to complete the pre-course work.
There are limited places available on this course, therefore, you must be able to demonstrate in your application and in interview, that you are determined and motivated. We are looking for candidates who are good with time management and who are excellent problem solvers. The technical side we will teach you!
This course is for women looking for their first step into a software engineering career, we will teach the basic fundamentals that are needed. Therefore the course will not be for you if you already have experience in the course elements (through recent work experience or through a qualification).
