How to Treat Diabetes with Norland Products in Nigeria

It is pertinent to note that the number of people with diabetes according to www.who.int rose from one hundred and eight million in 1980 to a whopping four hundred and twenty-two million in 2014.

Nevertheless, this amount has continued rising swiftly in the low and middle-income countries than in countries with high income.

It must be understood that diabetes is a primary cause of other conditions like:

  • Blindness
  • Heart attacks
  • Stroke
  • Kidney failure, and;
  • Lower limb amputation

Between 2000 and 2016, there was a five percent increase in premature mortality due to diabetes. In the year 2019, roughly 1.5 million deaths were directly caused a result of diabetes.

Understand that diabetes can be treated, and its consequence can be avoided. Or, it can be delayed with physical activity, diet, regular screening, medication and treatment for further complications.

As we proceed with this article, it is best to have a detailed understanding of the nature of diabetes.

What Is Diabetes?

For those with diabetes, their bodies cannot process properly and make use of glucose from the food they eat. Diabetes has different types, and they have different causes.

However, they all share the common problem of too much glucose found in the bloodstream.

According to Clevelandclinic.org,  diabetes occurs when the body cannot take up glucose into its cells and use it for energy. This results in a build-up of additional sugar in the bloodstream.

If diabetes is controlled poorly, it can result in severe consequences that can cause damage to a vast range of body organs and tissues. This includes the eyes, nerves, heart and kidneys.

You may be wondering what causes the blood glucose level to get high; we will explain how it happens to you.

Bear in mind that the digestion process entails breaking down the food we eat into several different nutrient sources. For example, when a person eats carbohydrates like rice and bread, they break them down into glucose.

More so, when the glucose is in the bloodstream, it will need help. This help is a key that will get into the last destination for it to be used inside the body’s cells. This key is known as insulin.

It should be noted that insulin is a hormone that is created by the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ that is situated behind our stomach. The pancreas releases insulin into the bloodstream.

This insulin takes the role of the key that unlocks the door of the cell wall. This will enable glucose to enter the cells. Note that glucose is responsible for providing the fuel or the energy that organs and tissues require to function properly.

Those who have diabetes should know that their pancreas will not be making any insulin, or the insulin it makes will not be enough. Or, the pancreas makes the insulin, but the body cells do not react to it and cannot use it normally.

It must be noted that if glucose cannot get into the body’s cells, it will stay in the bloodstream, and the blood glucose level will rise.

Types Of Diabetes

According to  Healthline.com, diabetes mellitus is regarded as a metabolic disease that leads to high blood sugar. This untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and some other organs.

Diabetes has different types. They are:

  1. Type 1 diabetes

Type one diabetes is referred to as an autoimmune disease which means that the body attacks itself. Here, the insulin-generating cells in the pancreas are destroyed.

Note that ten percent of people who have diabetes have type one diabetes. This type is typically diagnosed in kids and young adults though it can develop at any age.

At a time, it was known as juvenile diabetes. However, those with type one diabetes will need to take insulin daily. For this reason, it is known as insulin-dependent diabetes.

  1. Type 2 diabetes

With type two diabetes, it means your body does not make enough insulin, or your body’s cells are not reacting normally to the insulin being produced. It is the most popular type of diabetes.

Over ninety-five percent of people with diabetes have this type. It makes its occurrence in middle-aged and older people. Some common names for this type two diabetes are adult-onset diabetes and insulin-resistant diabetes.

  1. Prediabetes

This diabetes is known as the stage before type 2 diabetes. Here, the blood glucose levels are higher than usual, but it is not high enough to be formally diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

  1. Gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes occurs in some women when they are pregnant. However, it normally goes away when the child is born. But if you have gestational diabetes, you are actually at an increased risk of having type 2 diabetes later on.

Some of the lesser-known types of diabetes are:

  • Monogenic diabetes syndromes

This is a rare inherited form of diabetes that accounts for up to four percent of all diabetes cases.

  • Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes

It is a form of diabetes that is specific to those with cystic fibrosis disease.

  • Drug or chemical induced diabetes

This type occurs after organ transplant, or it can come with HIV/AIDS treatment, or it can be associated with the use of glucocorticoid steroid.

  • Diabetes insipidus

It is regarded as a distinct yet rare condition that makes the kidneys produce a huge amount of urine. Note that it is not in any way related to diabetes mellitus but only shares a similar name.

Living With Diabetes

According to Medicalnewstoday.com each of the diabetes types has its unique causes, treatment and symptoms.

When a doctor diagnoses a patient with type 2 diabetes, they usually recommend that the patient makes lifestyle changes to back up weight loss and general health. As for a person with type 1 diabetes or prediabetes, they can be referred to a nutritionist.

Bear in mind that a specialist can assist a person with diabetes to lead an active yet balanced lifestyle and even help them manage the condition.

When living with diabetes, you can embrace a new lifestyle which entails:

  • Eating a rich diet in fresh and nutritious foods like fruits, lean proteins, nuts, vegetables.
  • Avoiding foods with high sugars that offer empty calories or calories that do not have nutritional benefits like fried foods, sweetened sodas.
  • Refrain from drinking high amounts of alcohol or keep your intake less than one drink daily for women and two drinks for men.
  • Engage in a minimum of thirty minutes of exercise daily or five days a week. You can partake in walking, riding a bike or even swimming.

As you live with diabetes, you will need to make use of insulin. Those with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes will need to inject or inhale insulin. This is to be done to keep the blood sugar levels from getting too high.

There are several types of insulin available, and most of them are grouped by how long their effect can last. Thus, you will find rapid, regular, intermediate and long-acting insulin at your disposal.

No matter the type of insulin you use, you will need to check your blood glucose levels with a finger stick.

This method entails asking use of a special yet portable machine known as a glucometer. The person with type 1 diabetes will use the blood sugar level reading to know how much insulin they will need.

Understand that self-monitoring is the ideal way a person can discover their blood sugar levels.
