How to Treat Keloids with Norland Products in Nigeria

How to Treat Keloids with Norland Products in Nigeria

If you never knew, when your skin gets injured, fibrous tissue known as scar tissue forms all over the wound intending to repair and protect the injury. However, there are cases wherein the extra scar tissue grows and forms smooth yet hard growths known as keloids.

According to Healthline.com, Keloids are known to be much bigger than the initial wound. They can be found mostly on:

  • The chest
  • Earlobes
  • Back
  • Cheeks, and even;
  • Shoulders

Even though they are not harmful to health, they may develop cosmetic concerns. According to Medscape.com, the keloid is regarded as an abnormal proliferation of scar tissues that develop at the cutaneous injury.

This means it can be found where one had a surgical incision or even trauma. Keloids do not regress, and they tend to grow beyond the initial margins of the scar. Do not confuse these keloids with hypertrophic scars.

The hypertrophic scars are degraded as raised scars that do not grow beyond the boundaries of the initial wound. And they may decrease with time. More so, keloids are firm, and their colour can change from pink to red.

They are irritated bumps that gradually grow and appear where you once had skin damage. If you never knew, keloids form as a result of abnormal scar formation. Those with darker skin are more susceptible to developing keloids.

You cannot just cut out a keloid because it will most likely lead to an even bigger keloid developing h at the excision area. Those who are liable to forming keloid must avoid cosmetic surgery.

Sometimes, people refer to them as scars that have no idea when to stop. For example, keloids are often referred to as keloid scar, and they rise suddenly above the entire skin. They are irregularly shaped and grow progressively.

Differing from scars, they do not regress with time.

Symptoms Of Keloids

According to Familydoctor.org, keloids tend to have some characteristics. And they include:

  • They appear and grow subtly

For those unaware, it can take about three months or even up to a year before you get to see the first signs of one keloid. Furthermore, it takes works or months for it to start growing.

There are times wherein they keep growing slowly for years.

  • They have specific colours

They start as raised pink, red or even a purple scar. Keloids are raised scars with a flat surface. Its colour gets dark with time.

Keloids end up getting darker than a person’s skin, and its border is darker than the centre.

  • They are different from the surrounding skin

It feels different from the surrounding skin. And, some of the keloids may feel doughy and soft. For others, they are rubbery and hard.

  • It causes tenderness, pain and itching

As they grow, some of the keloids become itchy, tender or even painful to the touch. However, the symptoms stop when the keloid stops growing.

  • They can form anywhere on the human body

Though they can form anywhere, they are commonly found on the shoulders, backs, neck, ears and chest. They range in size as they go from smaller to twelve inches or even more.

Causes Of Keloid

After the injury forms on your skin, the cells begin trying to repair it by creating a scar. In some people, these scar tissues form long after the injury already heals. The extra scar tissue makes the raised area on your skin known as a keloid.

Interestingly, doctors are still not sure why the skin of some people gets to scar this way. There are diverse skin injuries that can result in a keloid. They are:

  • Puncture wounds
  • Surgical scars
  • Cuts
  • Chickenpox
  • Insect bites
  • Tattoos
  • Piercings
  • Severe acne
  • Injection sites

Furthermore, some people are more vulnerable to developing a keloid whenever they scar. People who are susceptible to it are:

  • Asians, blacks and Latinos
  • Pregnant women
  • Teenagers going through puberty
  • Those with a history of keloids in their family

Note that those with darker skin are fifteen percent to twenty percent more likely to develop these keloids.

Diagnosis Of Keloids

Doctors tend to diagnose keloids by mere looking at the skin. Sometimes, they may carry out a skin biopsy to rule out all other types of skin growths.

Treatment Of Keloids

According to www.aad.org, the treatment plans for keloids include:

  • Injections of corticosteroids and other medications

These type of injections are mostly part of the treatment plan for those with keloids. When they are injected into the keloid, they help to shrink the scar. Patients will receive these injections once every three to four weeks

On am average, patients are known to return for these injections roughly four times. The first injection administered will receive symptoms and make the keloid feel softer. Note that between fifty percent and eighty percent of keloids tend to shrink once injected.

Most of these keloids tend to regrow within five years. So, in a bid to boost the results, dermatologists frequently add another therapy to the treatment.

  • Keloid surgery (surgical removal)

This treatment plan entails surgically cutting out the keloids. Though this may look like a permanent solution, you must know that almost one hundred percent of keloids tend to return after the surgery is done.

To decrease the risk of keloids returning after surgical removal, dermatologists tend to treat patients with yet another keloid treatment once the surgery is completed.

They make use of cryotherapy or injections of corticosteroids as they may assist in reducing the risks. If the keloid is found on an earlobe, the patient will have to wear a special earring that applies pressure on the earlobe.

This will help in preventing the keloid from returning. There are times wherein receiving radiation treatments after the surgery can help in preventing the keloid from returning.

  • Pressure dressing, garment or earring

This is used after the keloid surgery. Applying pressure on the area aids in reducing blood flow, which can stop the keloid from coming back.

Understand that between ninety percent and one hundred percent of patients who use this treatment plan after the keloid surgery can prevent another from coming back. However, this can be not easy when using it.

The reason is that the devices tend to be quite uncomfortable. Therefore, if you want results, the patient must wear it for roughly sixteen hours daily for six to twelve months. Note that the pressure earrings are the easiest to wear. It is recommended after the dermatologist removes the keloid found on the earlobe.

  • Laser treatment

It can help in reducing the height and fade off the colour of the keloid. It is mostly used with another treatment like pressure or a series of corticosteroid injections.

  • Silicone sheets and gels

They are used alongside the pressure to stop the keloid from returning. In addition, there are times wherein silicone is used on its own to flatten the keloid. In the study, thirty-four percent of the raised scars had some flattening after the patients used silicone gel for six months, daily.

  • Cryotherapy

This treatment plan freezes the keloid from its inside out while saving the skin underneath the keloid. It is used in reducing the size and hardness of the keloid. It works best on small keloids.

When you have a few cryotherapy treatments before or after getting injections of corticosteroids, it may help reduce the keloid’s size. It makes the injections highly effective.

Dermatologists found out that the patients who had three or more of these cryotherapy treatments had the best results.

  • Radiation treatments

After the dermatologist surgically removes keloids, radiation therapy may prevent the keloid from coming back. Therefore, the patient may start radiation treatment swiftly after the surgical removal.

This can begin by the next day or one week later. Radiation can be used alone to decrease the keloid’s size. However, its results are better when it is used after the surgery.
