How to Treat Insomnia (Inability to have Quality Sleep) with Norland Products in Nigeria

According to Medicalnewstoday.com, insomnia is a sleep disorder that normally affects millions of people globally. A person with insomnia will find it challenging to stay asleep or fall asleep.

Judging from the statement made by the CDC, adults require seven to nine hours of sleep every twenty four hour period, and this is reliant on their age. Research carried out has shown that about twenty-five percent of people experience insomnia yearly.

But, over seventy-five percent of these people do not get to develop any long term issue. However, it must be noted that short term insomnia can result in:

  • Daytime fatigue
  • Challenge in concentrating, and some other issues.

In the long run, it may likely increase the risks of diverse diseases.

What It Means To Be An Insomniac

It must be noted that a person with insomnia has challenges with staying or falling asleep. They may wake up early constantly, and this can lead to problems like:

  • Lethargy or daytime sleepiness
  • Overall feeling of being physically and mentally unwell
  • Anxiety, irritability and mood changes

Note that the issues mentioned earlier may contribute to insomnia or maybe the causes, effects or even both. Additionally, insomnia may play a vital role in  the development of chronic diseases like:

  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Depression
  • Diabetes, etc

Insomnia can also undermine one’s work and school performance. It can go further to limit one’s ability to carry out daily activities. In simpler terms, insomnia is a popular sleep disorder that makes a person find it difficult to stay asleep, fall asleep or cause them to wake up very early and be unable to get back to bed.

And even though you finally fall asleep, there is every possibility that you will feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia is capable of sapping your mood, energy and, above all, your health, quality of life and work performance.

The amount of sleep a person needs varies from one person to the next, but most adults require seven to eight hours every night. Finally, it gets to a point wherein adults experience short term insomnia or acute insomnia.

It tends to last for days or even weeks. It is a result of a traumatic event or stress. Note that some people have chronic or long term insomnia that lasts for months or more.

Remember that insomnia may be the major problem, or it may be linked with other medical conditions or even medications. Understand that you do not have to live with the sleepless nights as you can easily change your daily habits.

Causes Of Insomnia

According to Clevelandclinic.org, many things add to the development of insomnia, including psychological, environmental, and physiological factors. Nevertheless, some causes of insomnia include:

  • Life stressor such as relationships, your job, financial challenges and more
  • Unhealthy sleep habits and lifestyle
  • Depression, anxiety disorders and other mental health issues
  • Chronic diseases such as Cancer
  • Chronic pain as a result of arthritis, fibromyalgia or some other conditions
  • Medications and other substances
  • Hormone fluctuations as a result of menopause, thyroid disease or menstruation
  • Gastrointestinal disorders like heartburn
  • Neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease
  • Sleep disorders like restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea

Risk Factors For Insomnia

For those unaware, insomnia occurs more in women than in men. Hormonal shifts and pregnancy can disrupt sleep. Also, hormonal changes like PMS, premenstrual syndrome or menopause can affect sleep.

Note that insomnia tends to be more common over the age of sixty. This is because older people may be less likely to sleep soundly due to bodily changes linked to ageing. It can also be due to medical conditions or taking medications that disrupt sleep.

Treatment Of Insomnia

According to Medicinenet.com, diverse therapies can be combined with or without medication to treat insomnia. They include:

  • Sleep restriction therapy

It addresses the behaviours that are not compatible with sleep. These behaviours include alcohol usage or caffeine, inappropriate room temperature, a television in bed and environmental noise.

  • Cognitive and relaxation therapy

It is done to correct inaccurate beliefs surrounding sleep. And it helps to decrease fear and excessive worrying. The person is advised to identify and control the tension by a series of exercises for the relaxation therapy.

The exercises entail tensing and systematically relaxing every muscle group. In addition, there are guided imagery and meditation used in a bid to concentrate on pleasant or neutral thoughts.

  • Stimulus control therapy

It works by linking the bed with sleepiness and not arousal. The rules for this therapy include making use of the bed for sleeping and sexual activity. You cannot use the bed to read, watch television, eat or work.

Here, you are to go to bed only when you feel sleepy. If you cannot sleep in fifteen to twenty minutes, you must leave the bed to do anything relaxing until you feel sleepy. This act must be repeated as often as possible.

More so, you are not to spend more time in bed than you need. And, you are to create a standard wake up time as well as a kidding daytime napping.

  • Sleep restriction therapy

This therapy is strictly based on the fact that excessive time in bed can result in insomnia. Thus, you are to limit the time you spend in bed to sleep efficiently.

This therapy works by restricting time in bed to the estimated sleep time of the person in question.

It should not be less than five hours, and it can be increased by fifteen to thirty minutes fitted into a specific week period. It will be done until the optimal sleep duration is attained.

Some medication to treat insomnia include:

  • Sedative hypnotic drugs
  • Antihistamines
  • Sedating antidepressants and some other drugs

Tips to Handle Insomnia

According to www.nhs.uk, easy lifestyle transformations can make a whole lot of difference to the quality of our sleep. Some of the tips needed to handle insomnia are:

  • Maintain regular sleep hours

When you go to bed and get up at almost the same time daily, it will assist in programming your body to sleep better. Therefore, you should select a time when you are more likely to feel sleepy and tired.

  • Build a restful sleeping environment

Understand that your bedroom has to be a peaceful place for nothing else but rest and sleep. Therefore, the noise, temperature and lighting must be controlled so that that bedroom environment will help you to stay and fall asleep.

For those with pets that sleep in the room with them, you should think about moving it somewhere else if it gets to disturb you at night.

  • Ensure your bed is comfortable

It is hard to get restful sleep on a bed that is too soft or even too hard. It gets harder also to sleep on a bet that is too small or old. So ensure that you get a bed that is comfortable to tackle insomnia.
