Informing and communicating are age-long attributes of human existence. For this reason, there has always been a need to ensure relatively effective communication irrespective of the age of human existence.

The methodologies of information dissemination constantly evolve from generation to generation. There was a time when the use of town criers, writing of letters, and the post office box was the most popular methods of communication.

But from the 20th century, the old-fashioned communication methods were gradually becoming obsolete with the introduction of digital computing. This technological revolution has influenced the world, and the effect of this is evident in the number of persons with either a smartphone or a system. Also, this development has seemingly changed the perspective of the world from the large entity separated by distance to a “Global Village”.

Nigeria as a country is not left behind in this technological revolution. Although the citizens have not fully adapted to the development, the rate of ICT compliance is gradually on the increase. This would not be achievable without the ICT companies operating in the country. Hence, this article was written to enlighten readers like you on the ICT companies operating within the country.

ICT is the acronym for Information and Communications Technology. ICT could be defined as the methods employed in the processing and communication of information through the use of technological tools. It could also be defined as the different forms of technologies that could be used in the creation, transmission, storage, and exchange of information.

Irrespective of the approach used in defining ICT, a common denominator in all definitions is information, effective communication, and the utility of technological devices. ICT is a broad field consisting of animation, digital illustration, software and network engineering, and many other branches.

It also cuts across telecommunication companies, system manufacturing companies, and hubs where software activities could be carried out. Interestingly, adapting to the ICT trend is not necessarily dependent on whether one is Science or Art inclined. Rather, it depends on the level of commitment one shows in the training process. Also, about 90% of the ICT skills could be learned through the internet; this makes the learning process easier and faster.

ICT Companies (manufacturing)

  1. Microsoft

Microsoft Corporation is the brainchild of Bill Gates and Paul Allen. It was founded on the 4th of April 1975 in the USA; as an advancement to the already existing BASIC program. Today, Microsoft, which was coined from “micro-computer and software”, is a leading brand in operating system development, micro-computers, electronic games and software, and mobile devices.

In Nigeria, Microsoft has its major offices in Lagos and Abuja, where Olatamius Williams heads it. The popularity of Microsoft is obvious, the reason being that Microsoft seems to be the most basic program a first-time end-user utilizes.

Microsoft software products include; the Microsoft Office Suite (consisting of Ms-word, Excel, Frontpage, Access, PowerPoint, etc.), Skype, Solitaire, etc. Microsoft also owns the popular “Bing” search engine and the “windows” operating system. Microsoft products have stood the test of time due to their simplicity and durability. We are on the lookout for more innovative breakthroughs from them.

  1. HP

HP is an ICT company founded the duo of Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard in 1939. Therefore, the name HP is a combination of the Surname of both founders. It came into full market operations in 1966 with its headquarter in Pall, California.

HP company is a major dealer in electronic computers and a variety of printers. They also develop top-notch software for security automation and orchestration, business management, and mobile apps.

HP has its Nigeria’s head office in Lagos with about 648 companies in the corporation.

In Nigeria, a variety of HP products are readily available. They range from software products like link reader, scan and capture, touchpoint manager, live photo, connected music, to hardware products including phones, tablet computers, and personal computers of various sizes and uses.

  1. CISCO

Cisco is an ICT company that offers both products and services to Nigerians. It was founded by the trio of Leonard Bosack, Sand Lerner, and Kirk Lougheed at Stanford university in 1984.

Cisco is known for its manufacturing, development, and maintenance of software and hardware for networking, communications, and other frontiers in technological equipment.

Cisco also has an academy that offers high-quality courses to persons either intending to start their tech career or wish to advance in knowledge. Cisco products include; catalyst switches operating systems, routers, cisco-collaboration systems, VPNs, etc.

One cannot talk about Cisco company without mentioning its cyber security section. This is because this company is known all over the globe; for its prowess in securing the cyberspace of clients and blocking loopholes; this has resulted in a 14% increase in the 2017 revenue of the company.

  1. Telecommunication Companies.

With Nigeria’s acceptance of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) in 2001, the first telecom network was Econet; later Spectranet, Smile Nigeria, and SWIFT networks. Currently, the companies operating are:

  • Airtel

This company was started as Econet in 2001, was bought over by Vodacom, later Vmobile, and after that Celtel, to Zain, and finally Bharti-Airtel.

  • MTN

Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) started operating in Nigeria in August 2001. They offer quality mobile and internet services. It has its headquarter in JohannesburgSouth Africa; while Nigeria’s head office is located at Golden plaza Ikoyi, Lagos. They also have a foundation that provides scholarships to 300 level undergraduates. In January 2016, MTN group bought over Visafone company.

  • Globacom

Globacom Limited is a telecom company owned by Mr. Mike Adenuga. Since it’s owned by a Nigerian, its headquarter is in Lagos. It was introduced in Nigeria on the 23rd of August, 2003. Currently, it has over a 55million subscribers in Nigeria.

  • 9mobile

9mobile is coined from the “0809ja” which was previously used in the Etisalat parent company. The parent company was launched in September 2008 but had a change of name in 2017. This company has an average of 13 million users in Nigeria.

ICT has come to stay in Nigeria and the world over. Therefore, my utmost desire is to see indigenous ICT companies spring forth, break the monopoly, and ensure that ICT gadgets are available and affordable.
