5 Possible Mistakes why your E-book isn’t Selling on Amazon

Do you have your book on Amazon and you are bothered about why it is not selling? Or are you planning to sell your book on Amazon and you are looking out for mistakes to avoid so that your book can sell quite well? Here are few possible reasons why e-book don’t sell on Amazon, and a few tips that might help you break the sales barrier for your e-book on Amazon.

Mistake #1: Poor Cover

In the world of books, whether printed books or e-book, book covers are major sales tool. It is primarily the first thing that draws the attention of people to the book. When I talk about covers, I am primarily referring to the design and the aesthetics of your book. If you want to sell very well, that part of your book must be a major focus in your overall marketing plan for them book.

Before people ever get to “hear what you have to say with your title”, a great cover design would be the first thing that is noticed. Research and reports have proven that books with great covers sell more and sell faster than those with poor covers. If you have to pay a good an experienced graphics designer to handle this aspect for you, it would be worth the effort and the amount paid to the designer.

Professionally designed book cover conveys essential ingredients and touch of professionalism. Furthermore, as the book begin to sell, there might a need to tweak your cover design to repackage your book for the market, in a situation where it isn’t selling as envisaged and you have been able to confirm or suspect that your poor cover design might be the problem. Make no mistakes about it, your first impression is everything, and online, your book cover has to make an impression on your potential readers – it must make a resounding statement that resonate with them.

Mistake #2: Uninspiring Titles

No matter how great and beneficial the content in your book is, you will have to find a way to let your title pass the same message across. This is one thing that many authors do wrong and not only does it make them not to sell, poor book titles will actually end up making you lose money. Your book title must be one that accurately and adequately summarizes what is in the book, and it should be coined in a way that draws attention and creates some sort of suspense in anyone that reads it such that they immediately want to know more about what “little information” your book title has passed across at a glance. In order to do well in this regard, begin by reviewing many top-rated best-selling authors, and study how they craft their title. This will give you some insight into how to craft your own titles, too.

When you do come up wit a title for your book, do not assume or conclude it is a great title. Ask around and let many other people tell you what their opinion about the title of your book is. This is a very important step.

5 Possible Mistakes why your E-book isn’t Selling on Amazon

Mistake #3: Not Writing With Any Particular Set Of Audience In Mind

When writing a book, there must be some people you hope will read the book. Usually, most books are written on topical issues than general. This presupposes that when you write a book, you most likely are trying to communicate a message to a given set of audience – this may be youths, pregnant women, parents, professionals in different fields, the ageing, students, business owners, leaders, just to mention but a few. You might as well be addressing issues in your book that are based on specific topics such as finances, mental health, career success, investment, savings, parenting, management, cooking, snail farming, business planning, workout, health and wellness, relationships, marital issues, budgeting, and so on. If that is true, then you must have your target readers at a very prominent corner of your heart and mind as you write. This is because, you are writing for them, and if you write your book without keeping those who will read it in mind, you might end up with a book that ends up not communicating or resonating with those for whom you thought the book to have been written for. This is a sad case of many author.

Mistake #4: You’re Not A Known Author

One major factor that affect sales in the book industry is the track record and popularity of authors. This isn’t a mistake in that sense, but I have decided to include it on this list as it is going to be very helpful in positioning your book for early market recognition, acceptance and good sales.

There are two major reasons why people would buy a book quickly, immediately, on the spur of the moment, without thinking – even if it wasn’t in their budget at the time they’re seeing the book. One reason is if the author is a well know person whose writings have had positive impacts on their lives in the past. This is why best-selling authors are always best-selling authors – because they leverage on their past successes to sell their new product. Based on the effects of their previous writings on the lives of many people, many people will gladly buy a book just knowing it was written by such an author – even before they care about what the content of the book might be. In this case, the name of the author is already selling his books! It takes hard work and patience to get there.

The second reason why many people would buy a book quickly, if the author is unfamiliar, is that when they see the title for the first time, it resonates with their most dire need at the moment. The title just sounds so much like a solution to the problem they have been trying to solve. It just clicked, and they’re like, “Wow! I need this and I must get it now!” If you are just entering the market as an author, this is your key to unlocking popularity and sales. Whatever you are going to do to come up with that striking title – such that when those for whom you have written the book meet it, there is a spark, and there is a connection that makes them want to buy – must be figured out.

5 Possible Mistakes why your E-book isn’t Selling on Amazon

Mistake #5: Poor Editing

A professional editing is one of the most important investment you can make in your book. Errors in spelling, basic grammar, and sentence structure will doom your book before readers finish the first chapter, and this may have subsequent adverse effect on any other book that carries your name in the future. One fact you must accept is that you’re not good at everything. So, learn to recognize your areas of strength different from the areas where you are not so good, and learn to ask for the help of other people who can save that aspect of your life and make it beautiful as if all were perfect. If you ever saw a perfect work or project, most likely, it wasn’t just one person that worked on it. It must have been a team work. Hiring a professional, not necessarily and expensive editor for your book project can go a long way to determine the market value of your book. So, give it a good attention from the onset.

Mistake #6: Rushing The Process

You can’t rush a masterpiece. Writing takes time, especially quality writing. The same is the book production process. It takes time to edit well. It takes time to design a cover. It takes time to market your book during your pre-sale period so that readers know who you are. It takes time to build an audience, and often, it takes more than one book.

Mistake #7: Short-selling Your Book’s Metadata

Metadata is the important keyword information for a book. It includes a book’s description, author bio, title, genre, and other information you can include to entice readers and help them find your title. It boils down to another opportunity to make an impression on readers — you should take pains to make your book metadata interesting, relevant, clean, and sharp. If your metadata is rambling, incomplete, or ineffective, it will limit the selling capability of your book.
